Culture Night, an annual all-island public event celebrating culture, creativity, and the arts, is scheduled for September 16th, 2016. Many arts and cultural venues, including the National Cultural Institutions, extend their opening hours on this particular night to enhance public access. These locations host unique events and workshops explicitly programmed for the occasion, and everything is accessible free of charge.

From its modest beginnings in Dublin in 2006, Culture Night has evolved into a significant national cultural event, attracting around 350,000 visitors to various cultural spaces nationwide. The initiative has ignited public interest and the enthusiasm of artists and cultural organisations.

Culture Night:

  • Encourages more people to explore cultural venues in their locality.
  • Highlights the wealth of local and national cultural facilities and resources.
  • Raises the profile of cultural organisations, activities, and facilities.
  • Inspires people to try new cultural experiences regularly.
  • Facilitates community involvement in the local cultural scene, fostering a sense of belonging.

The success of Culture Night is a collaborative effort involving a diverse array of contributors, including the public, artists, performing groups, galleries, museums, sports clubs, libraries, art centres, craft workers, studios, theatres, broadcasters, schools, community groups, local authorities, government departments, state agencies, public bodies, transport companies, universities, shops, and more.

For one night, the entire island of Ireland and select international locations transform into your accessible cultural playground. Explore your surroundings and ensure that Culture Night revolves around you. This event is presented by the Department of Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs in collaboration with regional arts offices, local authorities, and cultural organisations across the island of Ireland.
